| Competitive Bodybuilder | Arnold 2007.
From Ironhistory.com Message from Terry Todd. His sense of humor shows as he describes the last-named entry... Joe, Sorry to be so out of touch, but we're moving and the movers are here at the ranch as we speak. Also, the Arnold has been heating us. Anyway, here's the official list of entries. The events will be the same as last year except that we're dropping the 56 pound throw for height and adding The Manhood Stones, which involves putting round stones--weighing up to 520 pounds--over a bar approximately 50" high. We just made our final selections last night, and we all believe that it's the best field we've ever assembled in the Strongman world. We got all the men we wanted most. The 2007 Arnold Strongman Classic The 2007 Arnold Strongman Classic has filled the ten spots with ten of the very best men in the Strongman game. The Classic has once again invited ten athletes from around the world to compete in the heavist event on the Strongman calendar, and the ten athletes we have chosen were our first ten choices. They'll divide a cash purse of $100,000, and also receive additional valuable prizes. In no particular order, the ten confirmed Strongman compeitors are: Mikhail ("Misha") Koklyaev--6'3", 320 pounds. From Russia, Koklyaev is a newcomer to the Strongman sport, but he is also one of the top weightlifters in the world--with best lifts in the snatch and clean and jerk of 462 and 551, respectively. He finished third in last year's Arnold Strongman Classic, and he finished a very close second to the incomparable Zydrunas Savickas in the 2006 World Championships conducted by the Internation Federation of Strength Athletes. Phil Pfister--6'6", 350 pounds. From West Virginia, Pfister finished higher than any other American in our contest last year, and he then went on to dethrone Mariusz Pudzianowski and win the prestigious "World's Strongest Man" contest seen nationally on ESPN. Phil was the first American to win the even since Bill Kazmaier won over 20 years ago. Zydrunas Savickas--6'3", 385 pounds. From Lithuania, Savickas has dominated our contest for the past four years, and many people think he is unbeatable on the brute strength events we use. In fact, many experts believe he is the strongest man of all time. He has total body strength, explosive power, athleticism, and an indomitable will. Last year Savickas either won or tied in four of our six events, setting records in most of the four. Brian Siders--6'2", 345 pounds--From West Virginia, Siders is the top superheavyweight powerlifter in the world, and he holds world records in the bench press and total. He has only competed in two Strongman contests, one of which is our own ASC, but he has amazed veteran observers with his raw strength--particular his pressing strength. Vasyl Virastyuk--6'3", 340 pounds--From the Ukraine, Virastyuk has finished in second place in the last two of our Classics, and he is in hard training now in an effort to unseat the giant Lithuanian. An elite international athlete in the shot put in track and field and the 2005 winner of the "World's Strongest Man" contest on tv, Virastyuk is extremely explosive and fiercely competitive. Mariusz Pudzianowski--6'1", 315 pounds--From Poland, the hyper-muscular (6'1", 315 pound) multiple winner of ESPN's "World's Strongest Man" tv show has been in our contest before and is, partly because of his physique and his celebrity status resulting from his three wins at the WSM contest, very popular with the fans in Columbus. Valentin Pekanov--6'4", 390 pounds--From the Ukraine, this huge, terrifically strong Pekanov has never competed here, but he is predicted to rival Savickas in some of the events which feature brute strength. He has deadlifted more than 900 pounds, and he is one of the strongest men in history in overhead pressing events. Benedikt Magnusson--6', 340 pounds--From Iceland, this world record-holding powerlifter new to Strongman events came in cold last year and surprised almost everyone by winning one event and competing strongly throughout. A little over a year ago, Magnusson shattered the world record in the deadlift with an amazing lift of 970 pounds. In his early 20s, Magnusson is very exciting to watch and is a real crowd-pleaser. Travis Ortmeyer--6'3", 310 pounds--From Texas, Ortmeyer was our first alternate last year, and he has progressed to the point that we believed he deserved a chance to take part in this event. He briefly held the world record in the Atlas Stones in 2006, and he is a real up-and-comer. Steve MacDonald--6'2", 325 pounds--From the US, MacDonald is a big, powerful man who earned his invitation by winning the US Strongman Championship last year. He is a very powerful deadlifter who is also good in the overhead lifts. Joe Roark--5'5", 220 cuddly pounds--From Ill. oddly enough, and known for his sleight-of-hand strength. He's our first alternate. Joe, feel free to distribute this to your guys. Let the games begin!
